Because we largely dry-camp away from 120 shore power, we rarely use our R-Pod "entertainment center" (also because I rarely need to be "entertained" when camping). Nevertheless, it would be nice to have music once in a while apart from my I-pod. Have any of you taking out the 120 system and replaced it with a 12 volt "entertainment center"? If so, what reasonably priced brands and models have worked for you? Also, what have you done to hook it up to the 12 volt system in your pod.

We have been pretty happy just using some self powered speakers, and linking wired or BT from one of our phones. I have considered adding a 12v entertainment system, depending on where I put it, either steal power from somewhere close, or run a new circuit. We mostly want one for outside, in the dome, and considered a Jensen.. The parts and accessories guy from FR swears he will have them at the Goshen Rally, and at a great price.. so, if I get to see one in person..(and like it) I will instal in the wall just right of the door, pull power from the distribution box on a dedicated circuit..

I too was looking at the Jensen from Campingworld, which appears to have one on sale this month. I assume that you would mount it, as you said, to the right of the doorway of the 177 as you look out of the door, not in - in other words, just above the switches and gauges. It's an ideal place, which incidentally where it is positioned on the Lance 1685 (A friend owns one of those pricey trailers). My only questions is whether there are wires running to the switches and gauges from the pod ceiling. I had to severe those things. The wall itself appears a little too insubstantial to support the Jensen unit, but I guess it could be shored up. I wish FR would provide a wiring diagram of their pods. It would make mods a lot easier.

No, I plan to mount it in the outside wall, so it's "face" is in the dome. It's about 7 inches deep... It is made for that kind of "outdoor" mounting.
If I was going to mount one indoors, I would mount the head unit in a under cabinet housing, and put the speakers in the two reccessed spots of the oversink cabinet. Pull 12v from the light circuit. |

Good idea, particularly regarding the speaker location. Given the lack of storage space in the 177, I wonder where I could put the under cabinet housing without giving up storage space. Thanks for the tip regarding the under cabinet housing, however. I'll have to put my brain to it.

I was thinking under the over sink cabinet in our 177, Left side, but we have a 14" deep cabinet, not everybody does, and it could make a difference..

Lucky you to have that big cabinet. Mine won't hold a paper plate sitting flat.

I saw that in some previous posts. You do nice finish work. You even seem to get the stain to match the color of the stain that FR uses on their pods. It's hard to get the color right.
Also, you don't seem to be bothered by running sheet rock screws into the ceiling of the pod. I always worry about drilling into a power line serving the ceiling lights. I suppose that those wires run along the center of the ceiling and if you drill into the ceiling close enough to the ceiling edges, you're going to miss them. I wish FR would provide a wiring diagram. The safe thing would be to locate the aluminum ribs in the ceiling and drill into those. But, again, FR should provide a schematic of the pod so pod mod-ers could work without anxiety of screwing things up.

Well.. while I don't have MUCH fear of that.. for this mod, you are screwing into the slide.. no worries. You know exactly where the only wire is..
