Hello!

We are considering purchasing a 171 or 177.  I notice the only difference is the small slide, but the floorplan is the same.  We have seen the 177 in person, but they didn't have a 171 on the lot.  From pics on internet, it appears that the 171 offers a bit more storage (perhaps where the slide mechanisms are on the 177).  Any opinions or insight on which you would prefer?

Thanks for your help!

It basically depends on how much "stuff" you plan on hauling with you and if you prefer storage space or "move around" space.  We liked the layout of the 171 by the floorplans.  When we visited a dealer we were able to see the 171, 172, 173, 174, and 175 in person.  We loved the 171 until we went into the 175 and saw all the extra room (personal space).  We were set to order it and then the 177 came out.  Then it was a no brainer.  We previously had a 26 ft. trailerable sailboat with little to no storage, so the 177's storage is not a problem for us.  We are also doing a few mods to give us a bit more storage space, so we'll be good to go.  The more space we have, the more space we fill.................we found that out when we emptied the boat before selling it.

There is a bit more kitchen storage space in the 171 - the upper cabinets are full-height and there is a little more room in the bottom cabinets, and the kitchen counter is a little bit bigger.  But frankly, there isn't much difference in storage space.  Certainly not enough (in my opinion) in a difference to choose one over the other.

Of course, the 177 has a slide, which does add some room.  Personally, I'm happy without the slide (I once said 'I won't be doing pirouettes in the kitchen'), but the extra room may be important to you.  The slide weighs an extra 220 pounds, which may be a consideration for you: if your vehicle's tow capacity is only 3500 pounds, you may want to consider the lighter 171.

But really, I see the choice between a 171 and 177 to be more of an aesthetic, personal one.  I don't see a downside to either.

I don"t know about the nissan but our saturn vue with a V6 gets 27 MPG without trailer 11.5 pulling our 171. The 177 is a great design it gives you more room but with a little more weight compared to the 171. I think most of the drop in gas mileage is because of wind resistance the difference between the two in gas mileage I don"t think would be much. Thats my own thoughts I could be wrong.       David

Which is more important to you....more space or storage?  For us storage was more important.  You can have all the space you want, but if you don't have the storage, that extra space will seem small if you don't have anyplace to put your stuff.  We went with the 172 for the bunks to use as additional storage space.  We prefer to sit outside and when needed we have a table for rainy days.  Check out the mods section for some great ideas on how to add extra storage.

We were originally looking at the 175 and then the 177 was announced.  To us, it was the perfect floorplan.  We are very happy with it.  I personally like the slide because I just like the extra room inside.  With  the slide in, I feel cramped.  With the slide out, I feel that it is just right.
