I removed the stock speakers from the ceiling of my R-179 and replaced them with 6 1/2 inch Pioneer model TS-a1675r, a 3 way full range speaker. They are of course deeper than the stock, so I used the template on the box to make 3/4 inch thick rings out of plywood. I used a jig saw to do this. I put some fiberglass insulation above the speakers. I used self drilling screws to hold everything in place and painted the wood white. I used 1 inch screw counter sunk for the rings and 1 1/4 inch for the speaker. they sound a great deal better. I did it by myself, but a helper would be nice to hold things in place while driving the screws. Sorry no photos. Lark F-150 2015 R-179

For anyone wanting to do a direct replacement. I ordered the Polk Audio DB651S speakers off of amazon for about $65. These speakers are a touch smaller (in diameter) than the stock speakers, so in both cases, I had one of the old screw holes still showing. I touched it with a little white paint and it's not noticeable unless you're looking for it. I have attached a picture below so you can see one of the old screw holes that still show after installing these speakers.
Overall, the sound quality is greatly improved. I'm not saying your gonna be able to blast these and win any competitions, but they are definitely an improvement over the paper speakers that come stock with your RPod.
These speakers are slim fit, so all you have to do is screw them in using the little metal clips that come with the speakers and that's it. There are no clearance issues, they just fit. Here is the link. If you order these speakers, make sure you're ordering the "slim" speakers. Amazon does not return speakers. http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Slim-Mount-6-5-Inch-Speakers/dp/B000P0NJPS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1441733555&sr=8-1&keywords=polk+audio+db651s |

Thanks for sharing your speaker modification.
I have a pair of Infinity speakers which I'll be doing the same in the next few days. They are 5" in diameter and have a 2" depth. So I'll be adding a 3/4" spacer ring to increase their depth for mounting. I'll post photos and share. John B. Spokane |

I'm curious if there is a best way to remove the speakers without destroying them? Does the ring just pop off if pried?

Hi
If you look closely at the speaker grills, you will see 4 screws holding them in place. I believe they take a square drive bit available at any hardware store. Lark F-150 R-179
