We just brought our new 177 home and we really love it. However, I was surprised to discover how shallow the cabinet over the sink is. It will not permit a regular size dinner plate to be placed flat in it. It could easily have been extended six more inches.

That seems like a good idea. I may take a look to see what would be involved.

Furpod is currently doing that very mod to Tank's Mom's Pod. Not sure they are finished yet so there isn't a write up on it yet.
Furpods cabinet is a big extended one but we've never seen anyone else's like that. He will probably comment here and show some pics I bet.

Still in progress.. the stain is very tricky to match. But yes, our over sink cabinet is 14" deep, as Tank's Mom's will be soon. She is taking copious pictures, so in the next day or two, I suspect she will post them up.

I'm not much of a carpenter but sure would like to see pictures and a detailed description on how to do this mod.

It's actually not hard, but for the stain.. I have no clue what color the factory supplier uses (they claim "pecan").. but I finally just mixed my own. I think she has settled on English Chestnut, but am not sure..
I can walk you through the steps, without pics at this moment.. The bottom of the shelf is a torsion box. Remove the over sink light, and anything else you may have mounted.. Starting from the center wiring hole, pull down on the bottom panel of the cabinet, or work from the outside edges to remove that panel. Remove the microwave. Under the shelf, now that you have access, you will find wood screws going into the cabinet face frame, sides and rear wall. Remove them. The shelf bottom should be free now. Remove it. Slip the power line for the light out through its holes in the frame. Inside the microwave space you will see a couple screws going into the end of the cabinet face frame, through a support, remove them. Remove the screws holding the face frame to the roof and side wall, remove face frame. Look at the structure of the shelf bottom, duplicate it at 14 inches depth, reassemble. The frame work of the torsion box is 3/4 x 3/4 pine. We upgraded to a slightly wider cross section, increasing the frame members width a bit, in case she wants to hang something more than a light under there. We were able to find 1/8 inch Birch plywood at Woodcraft. The shelf bottom and top are secured with 5/8" narrow crown staples. the factory uses some great big staples to build the frame, I used a KREG jig and pocket screws and good old wood glue. I DO have both the old frame and the new frame here at the house, I will add a picture of them side by side soon as my phone quits beeping at me about it's battery status. |

OK, so here is a picture of the new frame next to the old one..
Like I said, it's pretty straight forward... At this point, once she is happy with the finish, we will cut the bottom and top sheets to size, staple the top on, mount the shelf and face frame assemblies, then close it up and hang the light. Some caulk around the seams to finish. |
